Tethys
Tethys is a living Carrier Beetle supporting one complete city on her upper shell. The people above her do not survive because they control her. They survive because they listen, balance, repair, reroute, and remember that every comfort rests on a living body.
About Tethys
Tethys is not scenery, machinery, territory, or a dead platform. She is the living foundation beneath every bridge, home, market, reservoir, observatory, repair deck, launch platform, and public square.
The city rises across approved dorsal shell areas, built with raised structures, flexible supports, distributed weight, contained routes, and constant attention to her condition. Tethys breathes, moves, senses, sheds, stresses, heals, responds, and changes the limits of what the city can safely do.
Her people can study her, support her, reduce unsafe strain, route heat, protect water, prepare for danger, and recover what she naturally gives. None of that turns her into something owned. The city lives with Tethys. It does not command her.
Everyone enjoys pretending I believe I run the whole city. I do not. I merely notice when the whole city is about to make my district responsible for looking calm while six other systems catch fire. Tethys is not led by one crown. She is kept alive by every lead remembering when to stop performing and start listening.
About Interdependence
Tethys survives because her districts answer one another. A problem almost never stays politely inside its own civic box.
Power needs cooling and venting. Water needs energy, testing, routing, and protection from contamination. Signals need quick reading and careful comparison. Repair needs ethical materials and clear access. Defense needs forecasts, medical readiness, clean airspace, water, power, and the discipline not to escalate danger for glory.
This is why Tethys culture values closures, warnings, reroutes, quiet corridors, maintenance work, and reduced load. Those things are not interruptions to civic life. They are civic life doing the unglamorous little dance that keeps everyone alive.
Balance is not peace. Balance is pressure, flow, timing, restraint, and the honesty to admit when one clean-looking system is quietly leaning on six others. If a district forgets that, the city feels it before the people do.
About the Fog
The Fog is dangerous because it attacks confidence. Visibility fails, signals confuse, distance becomes uncertain, and evidence can look sufficient before it truly is.
People live on Tethys because a Carrier city can move, read conditions, route systems, protect breath, and keep survival functions linked while traveling through a hostile world. Tethys does not make danger vanish. She makes coordinated survival possible.
Front Vent Plaza carries the public-facing burden of breathable confidence. Its air intake, filtration, pressure release, heat routing, warning bells, mask advisories, airflow lanes, air-status boards, and Teal Halo Filters make invisible danger readable enough that ordinary people can respond before fear turns into obstruction.
Breath is not background. Breath is public trust. When even a trace of unsafe residue reaches the air, people do not need drama, they need clear lanes, honest status boards, working filters, and someone calm enough to make panic feel unnecessary.
Build Up, Not In
The shell is foundation, not permission. Tethys can be supported. She may never be shaped into obedience.
The city is built above and with Tethys’s dorsal shell through raised, flexible, surface-safe construction. Structures use stilts, tripod bases, braced frames, flex joints, molt-safe pads, suspended platforms, raised aqueducts, contained pipe-runs, domes, pavilions, bridges, decks, and release couplings.
Nothing is carved, mined, hollowed, tunneled, bored, or cut into her living body. Canals are contained. Water routes are raised or surface-guided. Materials come from ethical recovery, salvage, trade, cultivation, or natural shed clearance. If Tethys did not give it, the city does not take it.
No carved rooms. No hollow shell interiors. No mining. No deep drilling. No forced molt. No structure that treats a living Carrier like inert stone.
We build like guests with a forever lease and a conscience. Up, braced, flexible, repairable. Not in. Never in. Anyone who says “just carve a little” gets personally escorted to the Nope Department.
Migration Path
Tethys is always moving through a world her city must read while it travels. Stillness is stranger than movement.
Migration changes exposure to weather, air, pressure, light, heat, water opportunity, environmental risk, signal clarity, defense posture, transit priority, and access to exposed or sensitive areas. The city is not a stationary settlement that occasionally relocates. Motion is the normal condition.
Daily life adapts around that truth. Routes close. Work crews redirect. Public events delay. Water and heat use shift priority. Residents follow warning colors, clearance notices, quiet routes, market changes, medical movement, and Rider operations. Those changes are not signs the city is failing. They are how the city stays possible.
People keep asking where Tethys is “going,” which is adorable and scientifically rude. She is following a pattern, reacting to a world, avoiding things, seeking things, repeating some choices, changing others, and making all of us admit that maps are arguments with legs.
Tethys Signals and Vibrations
Tethys’s condition reaches the city as patterns and consequences, not clean sentences.
Vibrations under built structures, pressure shifts, heat changes, water irregularities, bioelectrical readings, shell tension, motion rhythms, weather response, and choices in movement can all matter. Specialists interpret these signs through training, instruments, cross-checking, historical context, and restraint.
A signal can be urgent without being simple. A reading can be correct and still be assigned the wrong meaning. Public confidence does not come from pretending certainty. It comes from admitting uncertainty quickly enough to respond without becoming reckless.
A signal is evidence. It is not permission to invent a story because the room became uncomfortable. Listen first. Compare second. Speak only when the meaning has survived being questioned.
Other Threats
The worst dangers are not only enemies. They are cascades, false certainty, system strain, and danger reaching Tethys directly.
A Carrier city rarely suffers in neat categories. Water contamination can become public health, cooling, pressure, plant-system, and emergency trouble. Pressure failure can disturb heat release, crowd movement, shelter safety, and Tethys’s comfort. A signal read too confidently can cause the city to hurt itself while believing it is acting wisely.
External danger is just as serious. Rival beetles, Carrier contact, dangerous terrain, Fog interference, old anomalies, Rider desynchronization, and blocked launch or recovery routes can all become existential if they reach the shell. The Dragonfly Riders exist to patrol, deter, redirect, rescue, and intercept before disaster arrives close enough to touch Tethys.
If danger is close enough to look impressive, it is already too close. The best fight is the one nobody in the market hears about because it never got near the shell.
People
Tethys is not held together by titles alone. District Leads carry city-scale responsibility, Zone Heads keep specific survival systems accountable, and supporting authorities make sure no one district pretends it owns the whole body.

Travel
Across Tethys, travel is never just getting from one place to another. Movement must respect shell stress, route closures, living partners, district access rules, and the fact that the city stands on a living Carrier.

How We Travel
Tethys uses layered travel systems: dragonfly mounts for aerial response and trained flight, beetle mounts for ordinary city movement and cargo, the White Rail for district-to-district transit, and other animal mounts for specialized, regional, visiting, or personal routes.
How People Get Around Tethys
Travel is practical, relational, and regulated. A mount is never treated like equipment, and a transit route is never more important than Tethys’s condition.
Dragonfly Mounts
Dragonflies are Tethys’s most iconic aerial mounts. They are tied to Rider culture, emergency response, patrol, defense, rescue, and precision movement through the Dragonfly Rider Arena.
A dragonfly is not a vehicle. It is a living partner with training, limits, welfare needs, and bond expectations. Strong rider bonds can become fast and reflexive, but never obedient in the lazy “push button, bug go zoom” sense.
Beetle Mounts
Beetle mounts handle daily movement at human scale: family travel, cargo, carriages, market routes, district work, rescue support, and stable city movement.
They are the steady legs of Tethys. Handlers work with them through training, care, trust, route awareness, and common sense. A mount beetle is never a tiny Carrier, and Tethys is never a giant mount.
White Rail
The White Rail connects districts across Tethys’s dorsal city. It carries civilians, workers, students, visitors, supplies, urgent equipment, and designated beetle-mount cars.
Rail schedules can change because Tethys shifts, a route needs protection, an emergency takes priority, or a district system requires clearance. That is not transit failing. That is transit being honest about living ground.
Animal Mounts
Other animal mounts exist, but they are not the main travel culture of Tethys. Wolves, horses, deer-type runners, birds, moths, wasps, and rare Fog-adapted variants may appear through personal, regional, visiting, or specialized contexts.
These mounts require route clearance, handler responsibility, and respect for Tethys’s spaces. “But my giant wolf is very polite” is not a valid substitute for access approval.
Travel Rules at a Glance
Movement on Tethys stays flexible because the city’s foundation is alive. Routes are allowed to change. Safety gets the crown, and inconvenience can go sit in the corner.

Tethys has seven primary civic districts. Each district manages a survival function, but none of them stands alone. Power needs water. Water needs filtration. Defense needs prediction. Breath needs public trust. Repair needs ethics. Signals need restraint. Every district is a living answer to the others.

Tethys City
The seven districts form the civic body of Tethys: Skyward, Labs and Observatory, Tidewell Quarter, Workyards, Sanctum, Dragonfly Rider Arena, and Front Vent Plaza. Each has its own color, icon, function, risks, leadership, social life, and relationship to the living Carrier beneath the city.

Skyward District
Skyward is Tethys’s high-ridge energy and thermal-regulation district, where solar intake, heat routing, power staging, spectacle, elite housing, and status culture become one visible survival system.
Its towers, terraces, mirrors, domes, rail balconies, and radiant halls are beautiful because they are functional. Every glow must answer to load, temperature, emergency reserve, pressure safety, and Tethys’s body-state.
Skyward may turn power into beauty, morale, and spectacle. It may never let visibility, status, or celebration override Tethys’s limits.
How Skyward Looks
Skyward rises along high sun-exposed ridges: mirrored solar faces, elegant towers, raised terraces, gold-lit bridges, controlled vents, rail balconies, and polished public layers where spectacle always hides infrastructure underneath.

Radiant Infrastructure
Skyward should feel elevated, theatrical, expensive, and dangerous-pretty, but never hollow or decorative for decoration’s sake. Every platform, tower, rail, and glow has a job.
Skyward Shellmites
Skyward shellmites are the fanciest little mail-service nobles on Tethys, because of course Skyward found a way to make mail delivery look like a gala with legs.

Skyward shellmites are polished, ornamental, and highly visible, with jewel-toned shells, gold fittings, radiant satchels, and decorative route gear that still has to function. Their work suits Skyward’s culture: beautiful, status-aware, and absolutely expected to arrive on time.
Unlike rougher district shellmites, Skyward shellmites are treated as presentation couriers as much as message carriers. They move through elite residences, public spectacle layers, salons, social venues, and official halls where the appearance of delivery matters almost as much as the delivery itself.

Crystals
Crystals on Tethys can store power, carry light, support tools, decorate clothing, stabilize displays, or feed specialized charge systems after clearance. They are beautiful, useful, and regulated because useful materials have a terrible habit of becoming everyone’s problem when handled like jewelry first and hazard second.
Crystal Utility Ratings
Tethys uses simple public-facing ratings so civilians understand why some crystals are safe for jewelry, some belong in light tools, and some should never be treated like casual sparkle rocks.

Known Crystal Categories
Purple Fog Crystals are the strongest known storage crystals after decontamination. Blue Crystal Basin crystals are safer to discuss publicly as environmental finds, but they do not match Fog Crystals for energy storage or beam focus.
Purple Fog Crystals
Purple Fog Crystals are the strongest known energy-storage crystals once decontaminated and certified. They are prized for high charge density, long charge retention, and clean beam focus in crystal-battery systems.
Before clearance, they are treated as hazardous. After clearance, they may be used in regulated power storage, light systems, high-grade tools, jewelry, decor, or specialized energy cores depending on size, quality, and certification.
Blue Crystal Basin Crystals
Blue crystals from the Crystal Basin are useful, stable-looking, and very pretty, but they are not as effective as decontaminated Fog Crystals for energy storage or beam focus.
Their real value is signal behavior. Crystal Basin conditions can amplify signals and create false urgency, so these crystals are better suited for resonance tools, displays, lightwork, signal testing, and controlled research than high-output charge cores.
Lower-Output Crystal Varieties
Not every crystal is a battery. Some are better as light sources, display lenses, resonance pieces, jewelry, decor, stabilizers, or low-charge tools. Translation: pretty rock does not automatically mean pew-pew rock.
Amber Sunline Crystals
Amber crystals hold warmth and light well enough for lamps, decorative panels, low-output heat tools, and Skyward-adjacent display work, but they lose efficiency when pushed toward high-density storage.
Green Reedglass Crystals
Green crystals are better as purifier markers, gentle diagnostic lenses, greenhouse display pieces, and low-output stabilizers. They are not efficient batteries, but they are excellent at saying “something in this system changed” before people get smug.
White Railglass Crystals
White crystals are best as lenses, route markers, signal reflectors, rail indicators, and low-power civic displays. They are clear and reliable, but not forceful.
Red Ironflare Crystals
Red crystals release energy in hot, sharp bursts but do not hold charge cleanly over time. They are useful for ignition, emergency flares, warning tools, and controlled burst devices, not reliable long-term cores.
Crystal Use and Safety
A crystal’s rating does not matter until it passes clearance. Front Vent and Labs do not care how shiny it is. They care whether it is safe to touch, store, carry, sell, wear, install, or energize.
